5 Signs You Need a Chemical Peel

5 Signs You Need a Chemical Peel

Peels get talked about like a monolith, but the right peel at the right time can move your skin in a way almost nothing else will. Here are the five signals I look for in the treatment room before I recommend one.

First, dullness that won't lift. Your skincare is solid, you are sleeping, you are hydrated — and your skin still looks flat under every light. That is usually a surface cell turnover problem, and a well-chosen peel is exactly what solves it.

Second, texture your at-home routine has stopped touching. Little bumps along the jaw, a rough forehead you feel more than you see, pores that look larger than they used to. A peel resurfaces where your acids at home have hit their ceiling.

Third, post-acne marks. The dark spots left behind after a breakout heals — especially on melanin-rich skin — respond beautifully to the right peel chemistry, sequenced carefully so we lift the pigment without provoking more.

Fourth, congestion that keeps coming back. If you break out in the same places every month, a peel can decongest the follicle and reset the cycle in a way extractions alone will not.

Fifth, early fine lines and a loss of glow. Peels stimulate cell turnover and, in the right formulation, collagen — which is why skin looks brighter and more taut in the weeks after, not just the days.

And the one situation where I'll tell you no: active, inflamed breakouts or a compromised barrier. In that case we calm the skin first, then we peel. Getting the order right is the whole job.
